ABOUT US

Poca Terra Winery

The story of Poca Terra (Italian for “small land”) begins around 1910 when John’s maternal great-grandfather, an Italian immigrant named Giovanni Bianchi, settled in Chicago.  One of his first purchases was a wooden wine press, along with a manual grape crusher and wooden barrel.  His much-used equipment was eventually passed down to his son, Luigi.  John remembers his grandfather purchasing California grapes from the farmers’ markets, filling every available space of his car with crates, and using that same press to make homemade wine in the basement of his Chicago home.  John holds fond memories of his grandfather’s wine being served at holiday feasts and other gatherings of his large, extended family.

Four generations later, Giovanni’s wine press found its home at John and Karen’s farm in Marshall County, Kentucky.  For many years those old tools served merely as conversation pieces, but in the back of John’s mind grew a desire to continue the family tradition.  After much research on grape varietals that grow well in the climate and soil of western Kentucky, we planted a small vineyard of Chambourcin vines, a French-American hybrid that produces superb dry and semi-sweet wines that pair well with a wide variety of foods. So far, every step in making our award-winning, estate-bottled Poca Terra wines is done by hand, from the grape harvest, to pressing the grapes in that handed-down wooden press, to bottling and labeling.  Our dry reserve is aged in Kentucky white oak barrels. Poca Terra wines are truly a taste of Kentucky!

Our Vision

For many years, Poca Terra has served as our refuge from the stresses of busy jobs.  We look forward to sharing the calming ambiance of our home and farm, along with our very special wines, with old friends and new friends alike.   Our vision is to convert our 1890-era stock barn into a tasting-room and event center which will serve as the backdrop for monthly events.  The Covid-19 situation has slowed our progress; we currently anticipate the opening of our tasting room for Spring 2021.

In the meantime, we are licensed to sell our wines. We offer Private Tastings, by appointment, outdoors in a location that takes advantage of current weather conditions. Please call ahead to set up an appointment so we can ensure safe distancing and other precautions.

We are also able to complete sales transactions over the phone or online and arrange for safe “curb-side” pickup or UPS shipping. Open up a bottle of Poca Terra wine and let it play center stage to your private wine-tasting party, happy-hour, or just special night-in in the quiet sanctuary of your own home.  It’s delicious on the patio under the stars.  Come taste Kentucky!

      Poca Terra Release Party

      Exact Date:

      To Be Determined

Originally planned for April 2020, we look forward to the “reveal” of our newly bottled 2018 dry red Chambourcin and our three varieties of 2019 rosé. From one great grape comes four great wines!  Come taste Kentucky!

      Fall Harvest Party

      Exact Date

      To Be Determined

Harvest generally occurs the second weekend in September.  But anticipating the harvest date of grapes is a lot like anticipating the birth of a new baby.  The grapes are in control.  We will harvest when they tell us they are ready.  Harvest is great fun! We start early in the morning and end around noon with the crush. Then we serve lunch and, of course, enjoy a sampling of wines from the previous year. Even those who don’t drink wine have a grand time.  It’s a huge celebration of a year’s work!

      Tasting Room Grand Opening

      Planned Date

      Spring 2021

Hopefully, our Tasting Room barn will be renovated and open for business sometime in the Spring of 2021.  Fingers crossed that the world recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic and is back to normal soon. In the meantime, stay safe and stay home.  But you can certainly do that better with a glass of delightful Poca Terra wine.
